A civil engineer is a professional who designs and coordinates the construction of civil infrastructure (for example, buildings, roads, dams, etc.). A civil engineer can be active in the consulting and design phase, but also later by supervising execution on the construction site.

  • Employee in other public or private organizations active in civil engineering

Responsibilities

  • Take part in designing and executing construction projects, sometimes as a coordinator

  • Ensure safety rules and government regulations are respected

  • Make sure resources (materials, costs, deadlines) are followed correctly

  • Prepare feasibility studies and risk assessments for planned works

  • Supervise construction site activities and work with the project team

Qualifications

To become a civil engineer, a person needs to:

  • Complete a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at an accredited university. This usually takes 4 years and ends with a diploma in civil engineering.

  • A master’s degree in civil engineering or related fields is not mandatory but can be an advantage and give the chance to specialize. A master’s program usually lasts 2 years.

  • Gain the minimum professional experience required (a minimum number of years) to apply for authorization as a construction site supervisor. This experience can be earned by working in design, execution, or consultancy in civil engineering. The exact duration depends on the field and can be checked in Article 8 of the Authorization Procedure for Site Supervisors.

  • After gaining the experience, apply for authorization. The authorization is given by the State Inspectorate for Construction, based on an exam or directly approved by the authorization committee for applicants who are university teachers or PhD holders in engineering sciences with relevant experience.
