A lawyer is a qualified professional who can represent clients in court, assist them in legal procedures, give legal advice, and draft legal documents. A lawyer can represent individuals or companies in criminal or civil cases and may practice in several areas of law or specialize in one area (for example, criminal law, civil law, commercial law, etc.).

Types of employers
In Romania, a lawyer can work in several formats:
Individual practice: working alone or with collaborators.
Associated practice: several individual practices working together while keeping autonomy.
Professional partnership: 2 or more lawyers working together without separate legal personality.
Limited liability company: 2 or more lawyers practicing together with a separate legal personality.
A lawyer can change the way they practice at any time. All lawyers must register with a Bar Association, which is part of the National Union of Bar Associations of Romania.

Qualifications
To become a lawyer, a person must:
Graduate from a law faculty (4 years of study).
Pass the professional admission exam organized by the National Union of Bar Associations of Romania. After passing, the person is registered in the local Bar Association and becomes a trainee lawyer.
Complete a 2-year traineeship under the guidance of a senior lawyer (with at least 6 years of experience). Trainee lawyers must attend courses at the National Institute for Training and Professional Development of Lawyers. Optional: pursue a master’s degree.
After completing the traineeship, pass the final qualification exam to become a fully licensed lawyer.
A fully licensed lawyer can later choose whether to specialize in specific areas of law and must continue professional training throughout their career.

What else you can do
Participate in debates or mock trials, either at university or outside it.
Attend legal events, including conferences, seminars, workshops, or public court hearings.
Do internships, practice, or volunteer in relevant organizations or institutions (for example, NGOs providing legal advice or education).
Apply for and complete a master’s program at a law faculty or a related field (usually 1–2 years).
Take part in other activities that develop skills useful for lawyers, such as roles in student associations (secretary, treasurer), which build responsibility and document handling skills.
