Types of employers

An accountant can work in Romania in several ways:

  • Employee in an accounting firm

  • Employee in a private company

  • Employee in a public institution

  • Employee in a non-governmental organization

  • Freelancer, offering accounting services independently

Qualifications

Depending on responsibility and tasks, a person can become either a Chartered Accountant or a Certified Accountant. A Certified Accountant can manage financial operations, prepare reports, and handle payroll. A Chartered Accountant can coordinate accounting at a higher level and is considered a top professional.

To become an accountant:

  • For Chartered Accountant: finish a bachelor’s degree in economics (accounting, management, or similar).

  • For Certified Accountant: finish secondary education (high school diploma).

  • Passing the entrance exam for the internship regulated by the Body of Chartered and Certified Accountants of Romania (CECCAR), in the category of Chartered Accountant or Certified Accountant. For people who have also completed a master’s degree in economics, it is possible to replace the admission exam subjects with the master’s degree subjects, upon request.

  • Completing a professional internship, which lasts between 1 and 3 years. The internship ends with a skills exam. After passing the exam, the person receives the title of Chartered Accountant or Certified Accountant, depending on the initial choice.
