An interior designer can work in Romania under several formats:

  • Employee within the private sector, in an organization that develops projects meant for public spaces.

  • Employee within the hotel industry.

Responsibilities

  • Talks with clients and analyzes the way in which they want to use their space and the aesthetic preferences that they have.

  • Provides different options for organizing the space, taking into account the client’s preferences as well as available resources.

  • Creates visual concepts (e.g., mood boards) and 2D/3D plans to help the client understand the design ideas.

  • Estimates the budget required for implementing each design option.

  • Offers different supplier options for materials, furniture, and decorations.

  • In the case of more complex projects, collaborates with other type of specialists such as architects.

Technical, creative and design skills

Qualifications

A person that wishes to become an interior designer is recommended to:

  • Hold university studies (bachelor’s or master’s degree) in one or more fields relevant to interior design. Examples of such fields include:

    • Visual arts

    • Architecture

    • Business administrartion

    • Civil engineering

  • Complete an online or in-person course focused on interior design and obtain a related certificate.

This qualification can represent a competitive advantage compared to other candidates; however, the job of interior designer is also possible without such studies, based on solid knowledge of interior design principles and high levels of creativity. These skills can also be acquired through non-university courses or self-study, but they will need to be demonstrated to potential employers.

What else you can do

  • Participate in practice programs or internships within companies, NGOs or institutions, which include design activities.

  • Creating a own portfolio of projects, both individual and in collaboration with other people

  • Attending workshops, conferences, practical ateliers or seminars on subjects relevant to interior design.
