A university professor is a qualified professional who teaches and carries out research activities within their domain of expertise, within a university academic setting. The professor carries out one or more courses within their field, and contributes towards creating a dynamic and inclusive academic environment. At the same time, the professor carries out research activities, and can take part in academic projects.

  • Professor within a public university

  • Professor within a private university

Responsibilities

  • Teaches one or more subjects within the university, depending on their specialization.

  • Carries out lessons adapted to the needs of the students and prepares educational materials

  • Assesses the progress of the students and offers constructive feedback

  • Coordinates research projects at the BA/ MA/ PhD level

  • Carries out and publishes research projects, both individually and as part of larger projects

  • In some cases, takes part in various administrative processes (for example, in admission commissions)

  • Collaborates with other professors, institutions or organizations to exchange good practices, as well as to identify common research opportunities

Qualifications

A person that wished to become a university professor has to go through the following steps:

  • Completion of bachelor’s and master’s studies, and obtaining a doctoral degree in the chose specialization

  • Progressively holding academic positions within higher education by meeting the minimum standards for each role, as approved by the university senate: university assistant, university lecturer, associate professor and full professor. The minimum standards cover both teaching and research activities. Positions are obtained through a competitive selection process. The role of university assistant can also be attained during doctoral studies. The positions of lecturer, associate professor and full professor require the completion of doctoral studies and the possession of a doctoral degree.

  • Obtaining the habilitation certificate by defending the habilitation thesis before the specialized committee appointed by the National Commission for the Certification of Academic Titles, Diplomas and Certificates.
